Whether it happens in your garage or while you are driving, a flat tire is such an inconvenience. With all the foreign objects on and potholes in the roads, it’s only a matter of time before you will have to deal with a flat tire. Whether you can repair or replace the tire depends on how and where the tire was damaged. Tire repair must be done properly or it will put your safety at risk. This article will explain the difference between repairing and replacing a tire.
You’re driving along and all of a sudden, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning light comes on. Unless there is a fault in the system, this is an indication you are on the verge of having a flat tire. The TPMS is constantly monitoring the air pressure in the tires. If something punctures the tire, like a nail, the tire will begin to deflate. If this happens, don’t panic. Safely pull over as soon as you can to avoid further problems and damage to the wheel. If you have a roadside assistance service, give them a call to have them remove the punctured tire and install your spare.
Now, you can take the punctured tire to a tire service technician, like Geller’s Automotive in Byram, NJ, to have them take a look at the tire. Once you do, here’s what you need to know about properly repairing a tire:
- The must be dismounted from the rim.
- The technician should thoroughly inspect the tire to determine what caused the damage and where it occurred.
- The damaged material should be removed so the hole can be plugged with rubber and the inner liner sealed with a patch.
- The tire is then remounted on the rim.
It’s important to note that a plug or patch by itself does not suffice as a proper repair of the tire. Also, you should never consider a sealant or emergency inflator as a long-term repair solution. Finally, a tire that has been damaged in the shoulder or sidewall cannot be repaired. Nor can a damaged tire be repaired if the puncture is larger than ¼-inch. In all those situations, the tire must be replaced.
