Ten Commonly Neglected Maintenance Items

top 10 neglected maintenance items

Most vehicle owners typically stay on top of the major ticket items when it comes to their vehicle maintenance.  But there are many other common vehicle items that vehicle owners may neglect.  Neglect of these routine items can lead to bigger and costlier issues if overlooked for too long.  In this month’s blog post, we review ten items that should not be neglected.

Check Engine Warning Light

Believe it or not, many drivers do not always address the check engine light when it illuminates.  There are a wide range of reasons why the light may illuminate, including emission problems, loose fuel cap, or more extensive engine failures.  This warning should be a priority for any vehicle owner.

Diminished Braking

Brakes are subjected to wear and tear over time, especially if you do a lot of “stop and go” driving.  Worn brakes can easily become a safety hazard as they will be sluggish and could cause an accident if you they do not operate in time.  Having the brakes periodically inspected and listening for unusual sounds when braking like squealing, squeaking, and grinding can alert you to a brake problem.

Past due on oil changes

Motor oil is one of the most essential vehicle fluids that keeps your engine components cool, lubricated, and clean.  Even if you go past a routine oil and filter change by a few thousand miles, it can possibly damage your engine.

Cracked or Damaged Windshield

There’s no way to avoid a rock or piece of road debris that may hit your windshield.  When you notice a small mark or crack, have it addressed promptly.  Cracks can grow into bigger damage and obstruct your driving visibility.   Check with your insurance company to determine if windshield repair or replacement is covered under your auto policy.

Wheels out of alignment

If you drive on rough road surfaces, or potholes, you can easily throw off your wheel alignment.  Wheel alignment ensures that your wheels are at the right angles on the vehicle, to provide overall road traction and support.  When you neglect the alignment, it will cause premature wear and tear on your tires.  You may notice the steering wheel turns to one direction when your hands are off it.

Worn or bald tire treads

Your tires are vital to your vehicle’s stability, traction, and braking performance.   The treads will wear down with frequent use, and as the tire gets bald, it can be a serious problem for hydroplaning or flat tires.  The balder the tires, the less overall traction and gripping power your tires have on the road surfaces.  Always check your tread wear and replace tires when it’s necessary.

Air Pressure Slow Leak

If your tires are not well-maintained, they can develop a slow leak from tears on the treads or firewall.  It is important to monitor your tire pressure either manually, or through your tire pressure monitoring system.   If you frequently add air and continue to see the pressure go down, have it inspected for a leak.

Unusual noises

Most of us know the normal sounds of our vehicles.  If you are hearing unusual sounds from the engine or the wheels, there could be issues with various vehicle components.  For example, a clicking sound may indicate a loose or torn belt.  Parts that require lubrication may begin to emit sounds when they are not receiving the proper fluids or oils.  Try to identify what you are doing when you hear sounds and be as specific as possible when describing them to a service professional.

Burned out or damaged headlights or taillights

External vehicle lights can be damaged from minor collisions, as well as a burned bulb or faulty wiring.  Lights should always be operational for your safety and the drivers around you.  Do a light check with the assistance of someone else for the headlights, bright lights, turn signals, and brake lights.

Empty wiper reservoir

Drivers often discover that the wiper fluid is out when they need it the most.  Without fluid, you cannot properly clean your windshield, and trying to use the wipers without fluid can damage the fluid pump.  Keep extra fluid in your trunk for when you run out.
